As part of the BoSA project, CIMO is hosting a Scottish artist living in Galway - Marielle MacLeman. The artist's work is closely related to the curatorial practices carried out by CIMO for the past four years, and the artist was invited to visit CIMO in June 2023 for ten days and prepare new work in the domain of textile arts, inspired by materials from the CIMO archive. This project opens a new dimension of CIMO's international visibility and the beginning of a new program of residencies that will further make CIMO visible on the international scene of textile art and encourage the production of new works in that medium. In her previous work, she was engaged in researching the industrial heritage of Ireland, especially focusing on the wool industry. Her work explores ideas about place and material trace through drawing, sculpture, installations and participatory/collaborative approaches. Marielle is drawn to the transitory aspects of places and is interested in the interplay between the built and natural environment, and progress and slowdown. She examines the limits of materials and their dialogue with narrative. She combines found or context-specific matter with craft references, and digital with handmade.
The residency is focused primarily on a visit to Regeneracija in Zabok, where the artist got an insight into recycling and hand-tufted carpets processes.
Artist talk with Marielle MacLeman is scheduled as part of the Open Salon program on June 6, 2023.
